But most of 'em are pretty close to one another. Now, it's true that different amps will have differing amounts of built-in gain- it's as if the amps had little invisible internal volume controls. Now, crank the volume all the way to eleventeen, and on a loud passage you may call up the full 2 kilowatts from the monster amp and blow everything to kingdom come, whereas the 20-watt squeaker will steadfastly refuse to put out more than 20 watts and will sit there in a huff, blowing its fuses. A little 20-watt amp will put out the 5 watts with no trouble. Think of it this way: at 9 o'clock on your volume control, you're telling the connected amplifier to put out say 5 watts on a loud piece of music like an orchestral crescendo. You're confusing gain or level (= the position of your volume control) with watts.
